The new king of Late Night has arrived and Jimmy Fallon is a rating success. With over 8.5 million tuning in to his Tonight Show debut, Fallon broke the franchise mark that has been around for 20 years. Jimmy Fallon isn’t just bringing in ratings for NBC. He’s also bringing a new demographic to The Tonight Show with the 18-49 segment growing by over 1.9 million.
This can be due in part to his presence on social media thanks to his producer, Gavin Purcell, who also produced his old Late Night show. While this method has been used before in other late night programs, Gavin helped build Fallon’s fan base on YouTube by specially designing segments for the show that would then be shown on social media websites, such as the now famous Brian Williams sketch, “Rapper’s Delight” that has been viewed over 6 million times, or “#Hashtags2” featuring Jonah Hill that has been viewed over 2 million times.
Fallon’s Channel has earned over 37 million views since his debut just last week, which has helped build Fallon's awareness throughout different media platforms. It’s hard to argue with the results as The Tonight Show still averages over 5.6 million viewers a night, well above other late night competitors. So, Mr. Fallon, keep doing what you’re doing, and we'll keep tuning in.
